Does Autoflow adjust pressure to deliver volume based on VT or VE? Or perhaps neither?

When Autoflow is on, the ventilator is essentially in Pressure Control. The Vent "looks" at volume returning to the vent, then adjusts the target PC Insp. pressure from 1-3 cwp up or down from the previous pressure. (the Servo and 840's PRVC and VC+ versions of this look at volume leaving the vent to make the same essential adjustment).

It's as if you had an RT stand there and be able to super quick adjust the Pi target for each upcoming breath based on the just measured tidal volume.

When in Autoflow, because it's Pressure Control, the benefits of having a "free" exhalation valve is also there.

(and if you turn on ATC, it operates to "push" all the pressure targets--PS, PC, or Autoflow PC--to the calculated treacheal pressure). Don't miss an opportunity at a conference to then ask of the Drager rep (affecting a Regis Philborn voice) "is this your carinal answer?".

Interesting that the Draeger company started out by having a pressure cap which floated in the production of Beer. I've often thought Draeger has missed a big marketing opportunity by not tying in ventilators and beer, perhaps showing an RT enjoying his beer at home more because his patients breathed better while at work, or sharing a beer with the patient post extubation (and discharge of course), etc.

On a similar advertising note, General Kalashnikov, the Russian whom invented the AK-47 rifle (also referred to as "The Kalashnikov rifle") now also has a brand of Vodka named after him. (Type in Kalashnifov and Vodka into Google for some great pictures of the 80+ year old General toasting his new product). What a thing for a guy!! To have both a rifle and vodka named after you! Makes you almost want to take a pint and the rifle out to a range with Hunter S. Thompson! Then the General got greedy and now also has licensed an umbrella to also be named after him. Unfortunately there is nothing macho about an umbrella, unless perhaps you're a Bulgarian secret agent.

Perhaps we'll someday see a "Kalashnikov Ventilator". Sturdy, reliabe, able to be operated by peasants in far away lands.
