SBT
Renton, by trach hood trial I simply mean putting a patient with a tracheotomy on a trach collar to bland aerosol. SBT refers to an assessment of whether a patient with an endotracheal tube is ready to liberated from the ventilator. Sorry for any confusion.

A SBT should last at least 30 mins and no longer than 120 mins. If it is not clear that the patient has had a successful SBT by 120 mins, then it should be considered a failed SBT. Patients that have a successful SBT (30-120 mins) by either t-piece, ATC or PS 5-7cmH2O have a reintubation rate of 10-20% which is considered acceptable. Patients that have a longer SBT, closer to 120 mins, do not have an increase in the reintubation rate compared to patients that have a shorter SBT.

For more info on SBTs, including assessment criteria to see if a patient is ready for a SBT, check out the following article.
